While for the most part, braces don't hurt, sometimes the first week or so after getting braces can be extra uncomfortable – especially for kids. On top of that, children now have to modify their diet to avoid anything hard, crunchy, sticky, or gooey, which eliminates a lot of great, healthy, kid-friendly foods. We want to make the orthodontic treatment process more convenient for you and your child, so to help out, we've compiled a few simple recipes for your child's first week with braces.

Great Recipes & Foods for the First Week of Braces

  • Oatmeal with Milk & Brown Sugar : Oatmeal is a hearty breakfast staple, and it's also a great option for breakfast with braces. It's high in fiber while remaining soft and easily chewable, and if you prepare it with warm milk, fresh blueberries, and a spoonful of brown sugar, it'll be delicious as well.
  • Spaghetti & Ground Beef : For a more substantive dinner option that still won't hurt braces, spaghetti is a great all-around choice. Try preparing the spaghetti with a tomato sauce, but puree some carrots and spinach and add it to the sauce for an extra boost of vegetables. Toss in some lean, finely ground beef, and you've got a delicious entree that's safe for braces.
  • Grilled Cheese Pull-Aparts : For a little more of a delectable treat, grilled cheese is a great option – and this recipe replaces toasted bread with soft-baked buttermilk biscuits. Serve these up with some tomato soup and you've got a soft, braces-friendly dinner that kids are sure to love.
  • Peanut Butter Banana Rolls : When it comes to kids, usually 3 square meals don't quite cut it - and this roll is a great braces-friendly snack. Just peel a banana, coat it with peanut butter, and roll it around in a plate of Rice Krispies cereal. Cut the roll into snack-sized chunks, and you've got the perfect thing for a hungry kid afterschool.
  • Banana Soft Serve : The first week with braces will take a lot of adjusting, and there's nothing wrong with throwing in an extra treat or two. Thankfully, this recipe provides a delicious, devilishly simple, and totally-braces friendly alternative to ice cream!
