Taking Care of Your Teeth with Braces

Taking Care of Your Teeth with Braces
Posted on 12/19/2017

You’re probably well aware of how important it is to keep up your oral hygiene and keep your teeth healthy. You probably even have your own regimen set up! However, when you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment with metal or clear braces, that regimen will need to be changed up a little. As your trusted orthodontic team and orthodontist in Vienna, VA, we at Denise Nguyen Orthodontics would like to give you some tips on taking care of your teeth while you’re wearing braces.

Brush Your Teeth After Every Meal

Normally, you’ll be recommended to brush your teeth twice a day. However, when you’re wearing metal or clear braces, it’s best to brush three times every day (once after every meal). The reason why you should brush your teeth so much is because your braces will have many crevices where food particles can get trapped. The longer that food particles are in your mouth, the likelier it is that they’ll lead to tooth decay. Take care of this problem by brushing after every meal.

Floss Daily as Well

Not only will you have to brush several times per day, but you should floss daily as well. Food has a tendency to get stuck between your teeth and if you’re not regularly flossing, it can find itself trapped there for quite a while! By flossing daily, you’ll help remove any food particles from one of the most likely spots where it can accumulate. If you’re finding it hard to floss your teeth while you’re wearing braces, we can provide you with some helpful dental tools, such as a floss threader or an interdental toothbrush, to make the job much easier.

Don’t Whiten Your Teeth

Teeth whitening may generally be a great idea, but it’s anything but that when you’re wearing metal or clear braces. Because the brackets and wires of your braces will be covering parts of your teeth, the teeth whitening won’t provide full coverage. When you finally get to remove your braces, your teeth will appear spotted and striped! Wait until after your braces are off before you whiten your teeth.

Stay Away from Harmful Foods

One of the most important things to remember when you’re wearing braces is that you can’t eat whatever you want anymore. There are foods that need to be avoided because they can potentially damage your braces. These include hard foods, which can break the wires and brackets of your braces, and sticky foods, which can tug on and loosen the wires and brackets. Some examples of these foods include:

  • Nuts
  • Chips
  • Bagels
  • Hard Taco Shells
  • Gum
  • Caramel
  • Toffee
  • Starburst
