Braces for Children in Vienna, VA
At Denise Nguyen Orthodontics, we take pride in providing high-quality orthodontic treatment in a
warm, friendly, and welcoming office environment. Dr. Nguyen and our highly trained team of orthodontic specialists work with patients on an individual level, designing personalized treatments that perfectly suit each patient's unique orthodontic needs. While the most common age for orthodontic treatment is adolescence, we treat patients of every age at our office – and sometimes, it's best for us to start early.
When Should My Child See the Orthodontist?
We hear this question a lot, and it's one of our favorites – it shows that a parent is taking a proactive approach to their child's orthodontic health. In keeping with the American Association of Orthodontists, we ask that parents bring their child in for an initial appointment at age 7. We may not elect to start treatment at this early age, but evaluating early lets us ensure that dental development is progressing smoothly and also to spot any current problems or problems that may develop down the line. For some children, though, early orthodontic treatment is the best way to achieve a healthy smile, which is why it's so important to get evaluated at age 7.
Why Children Need Early Treatment
In most cases, we won't begin treatment after the initial evaluation, choosing to monitor your child's dental development until the perfect time to start treatment. But for some orthodontic conditions, interceptive treatment allows us to more effectively treat your child and ensure a healthy, beautiful smile. In those cases, interceptive treatment also helps us to reduce the total time your child spends getting orthodontic treatment. Every child is different, so needs will vary
from patient to patient, but in general, these are some of the reasons why we might elect for early treatment:
- Using a device called a palatal expander to gently, painlessly widen the upper jaw, creating more room for teeth.
- Influencing jaw growth and development to help create more facial symmetry
- Reducing the danger of trauma to protruding front teeth by bringing them into better alignment
- Preventing misalignment by keeping space for unerupted teeth open
- Minimize the need for tooth removal
- Shorten the overall time your child spends with braces
