Orthodontics can provide so many great advantages for a patient even beyond simply straightening a patient’s teeth and making them look more attractive. You may even be surprised to hear that braces can affect the way a person’s face looks as well.

Do Braces Actually Change a Person’s Face?

Yes, undergoing orthodontic treatment can bring changes to a person’s face. Don’t worry though – the changes that braces will make are purely positive! Braces will fix alignment issues with your face and give you a more symmetrical, natural look to both your mouth and your jawline.

How Do Braces Change a Person’s Face?

There are three main types of common orthodontic problems that will cause the most dramatic effect on a person’s appearance when they’re corrected. These are:

  • Underbites – With an underbite, a person’s chin will extend farther and look too big for the face. After undergoing treatment with braces, the jaw will no longer jut out, which will allow for a softer and more natural appearance.
  • Overbites – As opposed to underbites, people with overbites can appear to have no chin at all. Braces will be able to establish a stronger jawline for a patient when bringing the bite into alignment.
  • Open Bites – An open bite causes the lips and mouth to appear stretched out. It’s a very noticeable problem as the upper lip can jut out and in severe cases, the mouth may not even be able to close naturally. Braces will be able to treat the problem as they can pull the teeth into a more vertical alignment that won’t leave the teeth bucked. This allows a patient to be able to close his or her mouth naturally without having to stretch the lips around angled teeth.
