Orthodontics in Vienna, VA

At Denise Nguyen Orthodontics, we have proudly created gorgeous smiles for countless patients, whether through Invisalign, ceramic braces, clear braces, or any of our other treatments. We strive to educate our patients on how to care for their teeth and gums while undergoing orthodontics in Vienna, VA, so that they can maintain their stunning new smile for a lifetime. That’s why we’re pleased to provide the following information on brushing and flossing.

The foundation of a healthy smile lies in a great oral hygiene regimen that includes proper brushing and flossing – even when you’re wearing braces. To prevent the accumulation of food particles, bacteria and plaque buildup that cause tooth decay, you’ll need to learn to brush and floss properly while wearing ceramic braces – two vital oral hygiene skills that your orthodontist in Vienna will be glad to teach you.

Brushing With Braces

How to brush and floss with braces. When wearing clear braces, it’s important to brush your teeth three times each day (once after every meal and then again before going to bed). Braces contain many nooks and crannies that make it easy for food particles to get trapped inside, which is why it’s vital to remain persistent in your brushing. Follow these steps for maximum effectiveness:

  • Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush, and place a small strip of fluoride toothpaste on the brush.
  • Stroke the fronts of your teeth carefully using small, circular motions to reach any food particles that are underneath your gum line, making sure to hold your toothbrush at an angle. When you brush, you’ll want to brush up on your lower teeth and down on your upper teeth.
  • Do the same for the backs of your teeth as well
  • Use a scrubbing motion to clean the chewing surfaces of your molars.
  • Finally, brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth before rinsing your mouth thoroughly.

You may need to replace your toothbrush more often because of your appliances and your additional brushing. Make sure to replace your toothbrush with a new one when the bristles start to fray or wear down.

Flossing With Braces

Flossing with metal orthodontic braces.Flossing is critical because there are areas between the teeth that a toothbrush just can’t reach. Dental floss is capable of removing food particles and plaque between these areas. Unfortunately, flossing may prove to be more of a challenge when undergoing orthodontics in Vienna, VA. Follow these steps to properly floss while wearing ceramic braces:

  • First, you should pull a small length of floss from the dispenser.
  • Wrap the ends of the floss tightly around your middle fingers
  • Guide the floss between your teeth to the gum line, pulling out any plaque or food particles.
  • Unwrap some clean floss from around your fingers and move onto the next pair of teeth.
  • Continue this process until you’ve flossed between each of your teeth.

If you have difficulty flossing, a floss threader is a wonderful and helpful tool, which our office will provide you. Follow these steps to properly use your floss threader:

  • First, pull a small length of floss from the dispenser through the threader.
  • Slide this floss up and down along the front of your teeth; you’ll be able to tell when a tooth is clean because you’ll hear the squeak of the floss.
  • Floss around your archwire, making sure not to do it too forcefully
  • After you’ve flossed between your archwire and braces, floss between your other teeth and gums.

Your gums may bleed a little when you first begin flossing. This is completely normal, so don’t be alarmed. However, if this bleeding doesn’t go away after the first several times you floss, let your orthodontist in Vienna know at your next appointment.

Caring For Your Smile With Invisalign

Invisalign patients know that it’s just as important to maintain good dental health during this treatment as it is when wearing braces. However, because the Invisalign aligners are removable, oral care looks a little different than the steps outlined above. Here are some important steps to follow.

  • Remove your trays each morning to clean them and brush your teeth. Use a clear antibacterial soap to cleanse your aligners, or gently brush with a toothbrush that is not used for brushing your teeth.
  • Brush and floss your teeth after each meal and before placing your aligners back in.
  • Rinse your trays with water before putting them back in your mouth.
  • Soak your aligners to keep them extra clean. You can use a denture cleaner or Invisalign cleaning crystals.
  • Avoid leaving your trays exposed to air as this can cause bacteria buildup. Soak and rinse them if you have left them exposed to air.
