Common Orthodontic Problems

h-braces1It’s not uncommon for children to have orthodontic problems. Hence, the name of the page! This isn’t any need for concern, though. Orthodontic treatment is able to treat a plethora of orthodontic problems and conditions. With the help of braces or other orthodontics, your child will have a beautiful smile that looks normal and feels natural. Some of these common orthodontic problems that your orthodontist in Vienna here at Denise Nguyen Orthodontics will be able to treat include the following.

This type of malocclusion is defined by the lower jaw sticking out farther than the upper jaw does. It will cause the lower front teeth to sit in front of the upper front teeth.

When the upper front teeth are extending too far out over the lower front teeth, this is what is known as an overbite. This malocclusion can cause a number of oral problems, including excessive incisor wear and gummy smiles. In some cases, an overbite can even cause the lower front teeth to bite into the roof of the mouth.

Open Bites

Open bites are when the upper and lower front teeth don’t overlap; there’s a gap where these teeth are supposed to meet. Open bites can impact proper chewing, make it more difficult to retain water or other drinks in your mouth, and it may even cause bad oral habits.

These occur when the upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth. A crossbite can cause a number of different problems that include misaligned jaw growth, facial asymmetry, tooth stratification, and improper usage of the lower jaw.

Crowding is when there’s not enough jaw room to accommodate all of a patient’s teeth. Teeth will come in crooked as they struggle to erupt and make room wherever they can. Not only can it look aesthetically unpleasing, but it can also lead to a greater chance of tooth decay and gum disease because it’s harder to brush and floss teeth with overlapping surfaces.

As the opposite of crowding, this malocclusion is when there’s too much jaw room available for the teeth. This can also be caused due to missing teeth or it may just be a minor cosmetic issue.

Protruding Front Teeth

Protruding front teeth are when either the upper front teeth extend too far forward or the lower front teeth don’t extend far enough forward. Not only can this negatively affect the appearance of a person’s teeth, but these teeth are much more likely to get damaged in an accident or collision.

Unmatched Dental Midlines

Unmatched dental midlines will be noticeable when the back bite doesn’t fit and match appropriately. This malocclusion can be detrimental to both proper jaw function and dental function.
