Metal Braces

An icon of orthodontic care, metal braces are one of the most efficient forms of straightening teeth. Though their reputation might not be the most popular among children, metal braces aren’t nearly the monster they’re portrayed as. If you or a family member are considering metal braces, here are some things you should know before scheduling an appointment with our orthodontist, Dr. Nguyen.

Why Metal Braces?

Modern braces are smaller than ever, not to mention much more comfortable than years past. One of the most common forms of orthodontic treatment, metal braces are an efficient, affordable way to fix a wide range of dental issues that other treatments can’t. While they may be more visible than other alternatives, such as ceramic braces or Invisalign, metal braces have been improved to be smaller and more pleasing to look at than ever. Plus you’ll get to choose what color you want your elastics to be, allowing you to put some personality in your smile.

The Dos and Don'ts of Metal Braces

Do Brush and Floss Regularly – One of the adjustments you’ll have to make when you get your braces on is how frequently you brush and floss. Though two times a day can be sufficient, we recommend brushing twice that, once after each meal and right before bed, when you have braces. Food can get trapped in your braces and cause tooth decay or other oral problems, so reducing build up is key to your dental hygiene.
Do Buy a Special Mouthguard – If you play a sport where you can get hit in the mouth, be sure to wear a special mouthguard that can fit around your braces. You’ll want to get one that covers both the top and bottom teeth to prevent cutting your lips and tongue during competition.
Do Schedule Appointments in Advance – As your teeth shift and straighten, we’ll have to make minor adjustments to your braces to keep them working correctly. Proper, frequent maintenance can take weeks off the amount of time you’re in braces for, so scheduling and attending all of your appointments in a prompt manner is very important.
Don’t Eat Sticky or Hard Foods – To prevent breaking your braces wires or brackets, try to avoid eating hard foods. Hard candies, raw carrots, even chewing on ice can potentially damage your braces, so avoid rigid foods as best you can. You’ll want to ditch sticky foods as well, as they can get stuck in your braces and tug on its wires and brackets, loosening or removing them in the process
Don’t Wait to Get Them Fixed – Accidents happen. If you have a broken bracket or wire, schedule an appointment at our Vienna office as soon as possible. The sooner we can make repairs, the sooner you can get your smile straightened out.
